(highlight:: The first few weeks are going to be like drinking from a firehouse, but that's okay. Everyone goes through it. If you are biggest concern is finances, start by looking at the numbers and create some financial metrics that make sense you to and your board. How many days of cash do you have on hand? What does the budget look like? How much cash do you have on hand to cover those expenses? Where does the revenue come from? How consistent does revenue come in? No one expects you to be a CPA, but you should start thinking about some questions in your own mind.
As for grants, don't freak out. The best advice anyone can give you on going after a grant is 1) find out what the funder wants to fund. They are in as much as relationship business with you as you are with them. and 2) follow the directions. Most grant applications are very clear on what information they want - just give it to them.
As for board meetings; I haven't had one go more than an hour. Be very clear on the agenda on what decisions you need the board to make and ask them for their advice. It's also helpful to think about creating a strong committee structure for your board so you can communicate ideas with committees, let those ideas percolate at the committee level and bring up to the board when decisions are ready to be made.
I don't want to scare you, but prepare to be lonely. You are the only one in your position with the knowledge and authority to make the decisions you do and there will be times you will want to talk things out and you have to be careful. You can't always talk to your staff about certain things, you'll want to talk to your board, but bringing them on things that are strictly in your lane might not be a good idea. And talking to your significant other or close friend isn't always helpful either -- they just don't get it.
Be strong. Be prepared. Be yourself.
You will do fine.)
