Your partner is not confused and they do not need you to explain basic concepts.They argue semantics and intent in order to escape accountability and manipulate you into defending yourself.Over time this teaches you not to address issues with them so that you can avoid the deflection and having to justify your needs.This is toxic, completely unacceptable behavior.

I get the "your feeling/complaint isn't valid because that wasn't my intent" line of reasoning all the time as well.I've told him if you lose control of your car (emotional regulation) and accidentally hit a pedestrian (hurt your partner emotionally) the injuries sustained don't stop being injuries because you didn't mean to inflict them.
